The business school at OSU has decided to change the way
they pay faculty for online classes and summer Face-to-Face (FtF) classes. The changes
were presented as a fait accompli. No discussion, no recourse, we are in charge
and you are serfs. It does not appear that the administration thought this
through and considered the potential consequences. The first is that any reduction
in pay for classes is not going to be well met. The faculty most affected are
the lowest paid, instructors and clinical faculty. They also do not seem to
have considered the increase in the number of administrators and staff over the
last couple of years. It appears to the instructors that they are having money
taken away so that the administrators can do less work. The increases in
administrators and staff is seen as the reason the cost of college is
uncontrollably increasing. Faculty have calculated the cost of teaching online
and summer classes with this change. Many faculty will not be teaching online
in the future. Many of us will not be teaching summer FtF classes. The change
reduced my pay by approximately $8000 (it may be a contract violation). I now have no incentive to teach in the
summer. The most important consequence is that the university is not the
highest paying employer in the region or state. People do not like to change
jobs and move but will do so if there is enough animosity. This change creates
a lot of hostility. The good thing is that I will have the entire summer off.
My spouse has already said that if I am going to be around that long in the
summer, we need to have boundaries. Love her!
